Big Sur Spring Photography Workshop Itinerary
(Exact meeting times may vary)
Day one 4pm: Orientation the evening before (Thursday) in Morro Bay will include a general overview of the workshop.
What do you want to focus on for the workshop? Do you want to focus on telling the story of the trip, do you want to shoot black and white, do you want to work with shadows or learn to layer your images? We will help you to decide where you want to go with your creativity on this workshop.
Then we will head out for an afternoon shoot in one of our many favorite sites in Morro Bay highlighting the bay and Morro Rock while taking advantage of the best available light.
Day Two: 6:30am (Friday) – We will meet for breakfast in Morro Bay. After Breakfast we will caravan to our first location to photograph the beautiful San Simeon Coast and the sea lions close up. If we are lucky, we will be able to view and photograph herds of zebra (zebra? yes, zebra!), sea otters, flocks of vultures and Great Blue Heron on our morning safari.
We will then continue our shoot up the coast for classic water scapes teaching you a variety of skills from photographing in covered shade to working with moving water. We will discuss composition, exposure control and the use of neutral density filters.
You will learn these photographic techniques from two master photographers who are well versed in numerous landscape photography scenerios. We will then break for lunch.
After an afternoon break, we will caravan up the road to shoot classic Big Sur views for the late afternoon and sunset capture. The skies can be incredible in Big Sur, and we always hope for an amazing sunset. We will then move to a Vista Overlook point for the best full sunset option showing the spectacular Big Sur coast. We will show you the best exposures and compositions to capture this incredible view.
Day Three: 7am (Saturday) – We will continue our photographic exploration of the Big Sur Coast, chasing the right as the sun rises up the coast and capture a spectacular morning light vista of a unique light house. After the sun rises, we will then travel to a several coastal overlooks for some amazing shots of water clashing with sea stacks.
We will break late morning and you will be able to check into your accommodations in the Big Sur area.
In the afternoon, we will regroup in the town of Big Sur and caravan to another beach location for an amazing sunset with sea stacks and a coastal waterfall. We will review techniques in exposure adjustments to capture the setting sun on the shoreline as the waves crash over the rocks.
After our sunset shoot, we will gather for dinner for image review to show your best work from the last few days. Recommendations for composition, exposure and use of software editing programs will be discussed.
Day Four: 7:00am – Sunday. We will meet in lobby at your hotel and caravan to several more spectacular coastal views to take advantage of the morning light.
Then we will drive to one of the most amazing clashes of sea and stone you will witness in this region. This rocky shore sends waves high into the air which is a very spectacular sight! This workshop will conclude at lunchtime on Sunday. You then have the option to continue north to Monterey about 20 minutes and continue your photographic journey on your own.
When full, the maximum participants for this workshop is 6 people. We prefer small intimate workshops with personal attention to every attendee. Small group size ensures that every participant has ample opportunity to ask questions, and discuss the exciting world of landscape photography with fellow photo enthusiasts.
